Sprawled around the base of a ponderosa pine,
an alphabet of bark speaks the language of trees.
As sounds take shape from kanji characters,
each peeled- off piece of Sanskrit design.
Rest here and ponder; examine each letter,
all the meanings that start or finish a phrase.
Then slowly, take in another
for tree script is written through rings of time.
And after all the words have been spoken
with your ear pressed up against bark
listen to the heartwood of silence,
the place where all words are born.
